  • Practical Information

    Climate & Weather

Sumatra is covered in dense rainforest and sits right on the equator, giving it a hot and humid tropical climate year-round. The driest season typically runs from May to September, though sporadic rain can still occur. Heavy rainfall is most common between November and January. In Siberut Island, the average temperature is 30°C, so be prepared for hot, humid, and unpredictable conditions.

    Cultural Respect & Dress Code

    • When visiting local villages, it’s essential to respect local customs, traditions, and dress codes:

    • Wear trousers below knee-length and a T-shirt covering the shoulders (applies to both men and women).

    • Avoid shorts, sleeveless shirts, revealing tops, and skirts above the knee, especially in traditional communities.

    • Loose clothing is recommended as it helps combat the heat better than tight-fitting clothes. You are free to wear swimwear (bikinis, shorts) when swimming in the river or during jungle trekking.

    Important Information for Orangutan Trekking

Wildlife Viewing & Safety in Gunung Leuser National Park

    Orangutan Behavior

    • Wild orangutans live high in the canopy and rarely come into contact with humans.

    • Ex-captive orangutans in Bukit Lawang, however, often walk on the ground and may approach visitors.

Why Human Contact is Harmful to Orangutans

    • Orangutans share 97% of their DNA with humans, making them highly susceptible to human diseases.

    • Measles, tuberculosis, pneumonia, influenza, herpes, scabies, and worms can be transmitted through coughing, sneezing, spitting, and poor hygiene.

The Effects of Human Interaction on Orangutans

    • Close human contact disrupts their natural behavior and causes high stress levels.

    • Stress leads to poor reproductive health, high infant mortality, weak immune systems, and even heart failure.

    • Long-term human interference may result in premature death.

    How You Can Help #KeepWildlifeWild
✔️ Maintain a minimum distance of 15 meters from orangutans.
DO NOT touch, feed, or give drinks to orangutans.
Avoid selfies if an orangutan approaches you.
